Ten Tips for Improving the Health of Your Brain

The brain is a vital organ. Your brain controls all of your thoughts, memories, and feelings. It also manages and synchronizes all of your physical actions and reactions. If the health of your brain deteriorates because of a disease or health condition, you will not seem like yourself to the people who know and love you, and your quality of life will suffer.

Stimulate Your Brain 

You will slowly lose what you do not use, so it is sensible to do activities that stimulate your brain whenever possible. Activities such as card games, chess, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, trying out new recipes, playing musical instruments, reading, learning new skills, and teaching others what you know can all help to keep your brain stimulated.  

Eat The Right Foods 

To keep your brain healthy, feed it the right types of food. Following a Mediterranean diet can help keep your brain sharp. Blueberries, fatty fish, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, nuts, turmeric, oatmeal, apples, Greek yogurt, plums, avocados, whole grains, and eggs are excellent for helping maintain brain health.  

Helpful Drinks 

To keep your brain healthy, make sure you drink enough water. Dehydration can impact your mood and your short-term memory. It can also make you less visually aware of your surroundings.   

Do you get tired of drinking nothing but water? Other beverages are beneficial to brain health too. Try a cup of unsweetened black coffee in the morning for extra alertness, better focus, and an improved mindset. If coffee is not your drink of choice, green tea, blueberry juice, and turmeric lattes are great for improving cognitive function. 

Get More Sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential for keeping your brain healthy. Ideally, most adults need between seven and nine hours of rest each night. Sleep restores brain function. Lack of sleep slows your brain down. When you do not sleep well, it impairs your memory and slows your reaction times. It also makes paying attention and learning new things more challenging. Improving the function of your brain by making sleep a priority is an excellent idea, and making it a priority is not selfish. You can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself first.

Make Time for Aerobic Exercise 

Always find the time to include aerobic exercise in your life, even if it means going to bed and getting up a little earlier. Exercise increases the flow of blood to your brain. When you increase blood flow to your brain, it gets all the oxygen and nutrients needed to work efficiently. 

Strength Training 

Strength training regularly will also keep your brain healthy. It prevents degeneration in the hippocampus region of the brain. Your hippocampus is essential when it comes to learning and memory. Try to lift weights or use resistance bands at least two or three times a week to keep your hippocampus healthy.  

Improve Your Social Cognition 

Social cognition describes how you discern, comprehend, and utilize external signals that convey emotional and psychological information. To keep your social cognition skills sharp, you need to be around other people regularly in the real world rather than in the virtual sense online.  

If you care about keeping your mind sharp, resist the temptation to isolate yourself and communicate only via social media. Instead, purposely spend time with friends and family as often as possible in real and meaningful ways.  

Shun Sugar 

To keep your brain as healthy as possible, do yourself the favor of avoiding refined sugar wherever possible. Your brain needs glucose to function well. However, it is better if that glucose comes from unrefined sources of carbohydrates such as brown rice or whole grains rather than sugary treats. Eating refined sugar can impair memory function and may eventually cause dementia.  

Control Your Stress Levels 

Have you ever noticed that it is harder to concentrate on what you need to do after arguing with someone you love? This lack of focus after quarreling happens because stress impedes the function of the prefrontal cortex in the brain.  

If you want your brain to function as it should, try to control your stress levels. You can do this by meditating, doing deep breathing exercises, listening to soothing music, indulging in your favorite hobbies, taking regular breaks, and talking to others about things that make you anxious so that they no longer seem so overwhelming.  

Avoid Bad Habits 

Smoking cigarettes, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and using drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines, inhalants, opioids, and even marijuana can harm cognitive function. To keep your brain functioning as it should, try to avoid habits that you know will eventually damage your health.
